Sushi by Scratch Restaurants: Montecito has spent six consecutive years on Michelin's radar, the first two with a star attached. That is the paper case for eating here, and it holds up against nearly any timeline a sushi restaurant in this country can put together.

That kind of consistency doesn't happen by accident at a sushi restaurant. There's no room to coast — every piece of fish, every ratio of rice and vinegar, is a data point in front of the guest, and Montecito's data points have held positive for half a decade running.

The star didn't survive the move into a plain Selected listing, and that's worth naming — the guide no longer calls this the best in its class. But selected and dropped are different outcomes. This is a kitchen that lost a rung and still stands near the top of the ladder, which is a far better problem than most restaurants ever get to have.

The Spot
Sushi by Scratch Restaurants: Montecito sits inside The Montecito Inn on Coast Village Road, built around a single counter that seats just 10 guests across three nightly seatings. The intimacy is the point — a small room centered entirely on the sushi being made in front of you.

The format is an omakase-inspired tasting menu of Chef's Choice nigiri, finished with a dessert course. Guests are welcomed with a complimentary cocktail before the meal begins, and additional beverages and supplemental bites are available à la carte as the evening continues.

Michelin awarded the restaurant One Star in 2021 and 2022, and it has carried a Selected designation in the guide every year since, through the 2026 edition.
