Our Take

AMA Sushi sits in Montecito, one of Santa Barbara's most scrutinized food zips, and it has earned outside attention on more than one front. A national recognition list flagged it, and the Michelin Guide selected it for its 2026 roster — two different sets of eyes landing on the same verdict independently, which is the kind of confirmation that's hard to write off as luck.

That double recognition matters more in a neighborhood like this one, where reputation and price tag don't always track with what's on the plate. AMA's inclusion on both lists suggests a sushi program disciplined enough to hold up under real scrutiny, not just polished enough to look good on a patio.

The specifics of any given plate aren't what's being argued here — the pattern of recognition is. When a place gets picked twice, by different measures, in the same stretch of time, that's a kitchen doing something right consistently enough for outsiders to notice without prompting.

The Spot
AMA Sushi sits inside the Rosewood Miramar Beach resort in Montecito, serving Edomae-style sushi rooted in Japan's tradition of pristine, unadorned technique. The restaurant runs two distinct formats: an omakase tasting at the sushi bar, built on trust and spontaneity between chef and diner, and an a la carte menu served in the main dining room or on a heated patio, offering a self-guided path through traditional Japanese flavors. A wine, sake, and cocktail list runs alongside both.

Chef Scott Yonamine, a Ventura County native, returned to California in 2022 after nine years living and working in Japan. He spent time in Hakone, Kanagawa, working alongside Master Chef Hiroyuki Kanda, then two years at the five-star Aman Tokyo before opening AMA Sushi.

AMA Sushi has been named a Michelin Selected restaurant for Santa Barbara in the 2026 guide.
