Our Take

Sovereign has done something specific East Village hasn't seen much of: Thai cooking treated as a fine-dining proposition rather than a fast, cheap staple. That framing only works if the kitchen backs it up, and the sustained attention says it has. Two consecutive years on the Michelin Guide's selection isn't a fluke pick — it's a kitchen holding its standard steady long enough to get noticed twice.

The broader recognition matches that read. Landing on national lists in the same stretch means this isn't a local favorite propped up by neighborhood loyalty — outside eyes are finding the same thing San Diego diners are.

What that adds up to is a restaurant that took a cuisine often flattened into quick-service territory and gave it the room, the pacing, and the ambition of a serious dinner destination. Sovereign earns its position in East Village's dining conversation, not by novelty, but by consistency good enough to keep getting confirmed.

The Spot
Sovereign Modern Thai Cuisine is run by siblings JuMi Pitiwartarlai and Uthan Dejcomrunkul, who grew up in a Chinese-Thai family in Thailand. Their grandmother, Pakong Dejcomrunkul, once cooked at Bangkok's Royal Palace before passing her knowledge of ingredients and market shopping down to her grandchildren. JuMi studied Southeast Asian cuisine in Singapore before moving to San Diego, where she spent more than two decades working through the city's Thai restaurant scene. Uthan trained in hotel and restaurant management and worked at other San Diego Thai kitchens, including Seb E Lee and Thai Papaya.

The menu blends northeastern Isaan flavors with Chinese influences and modern technique, spanning dishes like Lao Papaya Salad, Isaan Beef Soup, Duck Curry Noodles, Massaman Lamb Curry, and a flame-grilled NY Steak & Beef Tallow.

The restaurant has been named to the Michelin Guide's Selected list for San Diego in both 2025 and 2026.
