Callie's menu jumps borders on purpose. Spanish patatas bravas sit near North African merguez and Lebanese fattoush, and the pace of the room argues that the mixing works rather than just sounding good on paper. Babaganoush arrives with a puff of house pita that steams your face open when you tear it, which is the kind of small theater that actually improves the dish instead of distracting from it.

The Aleppo chicken is the one to watch for. Red-aproned staff carry it past tables constantly, and the reason becomes obvious once it lands: skin shattered and crisp, meat still moist, plated with sumac pickles, yogurt, and coriander honey in a combination that reads improbable and eats exactly right. The terracotta tagines and cookbook stacks around the dining room aren't set dressing so much as a fair preview of what's coming off the stove.

San Diego Magazine has kept Callie on its radar, and Michelin has handed it a Bib Gourmand five years running, evidence pointing at the same thing the plates already show: a kitchen translating a wide swath of the Mediterranean without losing precision on any single stop along the way.

The Spot
Callie sits in Downtown San Diego, built around chef Travis Swikard's take on Mediterranean cooking. Before opening Callie, Swikard spent time cooking at Daniel Boulud's Boulud Sud in New York, absorbing flavors from Greece, Spain, Italy, Morocco, and the Middle East. Back home, he pairs those influences with Southern California's farmers and fishermen under what the restaurant calls Cuisine du Soleil — light, bright, bold food built on the connection between land, sea, and season.

Guests keep coming back for the babaganoush and pita, along with rotating preparations of chicken and mushrooms that regulars describe as inventive. The restaurant has since expanded with a sister spot, Fleurette.

Callie has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand every year from 2021 through 2026 (with the exception of 2022), and it appears on the Eater 38 as well as San Diego Magazine's Best of 2025 list.
