L’ Orange

Find the orange door near Ladd's Addition, climb the stairs, and the room does the rest of the arguing: a little worn-in, a little strange, entirely unbothered by the idea of impressing you. That's the trick of L'Orange — it plays loose with French technique and calls the result French-ish, and the looseness is where the good stuff lives.

The chicken liver mousse tartlet moves fast enough to disappear before the dining room fills, which tells you something about who's ordering. The tête de moine, shaved into a rosette with honeyed hazelnuts and a dusting of fennel pollen, does the rare trick of working as either a starter or a way to end the meal, and either way it's the dish to build the visit around. Underneath the comfort there's real technical nerve — sauces dehydrated and shattered into cracker-thin shards, the kind of move that could feel show-offy elsewhere but reads here as one more form of hospitality.

The wine list runs biodynamic and the menu turns over often enough that regulars keep coming back to see what changed. There's also an owl-wallpapered bathroom nobody quite explains, which fits a place that clearly enjoys itself. The National Restaurant List recognition just confirmed what the neighborhood already knew.
