Dan & Louis Oyster Bar has occupied its Southwest Ankeny Street address since Louis C. Wachsmuth opened it in 1907, and the same family has run it for five generations since. Decades of family history line the walls, giving the dining room the feel of a working museum as much as a restaurant.
The menu runs through fresh shucked and baked oysters, clam chowder, oyster stew, and other seafood dishes, backed by a full bar of cocktails and Oregon craft beer. Regulars keep coming back for the chowder and the oysters, and the old-school charm and friendly service get mentioned as often as the food.
It's widely regarded as one of Portland's old-school seafood institutions, a downtown fixture that's outlasted plenty of trends around it.
