Our Take

Royal Sushi & Izakaya is two restaurants in a marriage: a loud, late izakaya of skewers and small plates up front, and behind it a hushed omakase counter where Jesse Ito cuts some of the best sushi on the East Coast. The Beard Foundation made it official — Best Chef, after years of finalist nods — with a Bib Gourmand and a 50 Best listing rounding out the record.

The izakaya keeps the place a neighborhood fixture; the counter keeps it a destination. Few rooms in America do both at once, and none do it this casually.

The Spot
Royal Sushi & Izakaya pairs an omakase program with an izakaya menu in Queen Village. Duck and gyoza have developed a following alongside the sushi, and the restaurant is known for reasonable walk-in waits even as its omakase seats stay hard to book.

The kitchen has drawn sustained national recognition. The restaurant's chef has been a James Beard finalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026, a semifinalist in 2025 and 2026, and won Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2026. Michelin awarded the restaurant a Bib Gourmand in 2025, and it was listed among North America's 50 Best Restaurants the same year. Philadelphia Magazine also named it among the city's best in 2025.

Service is noted by regulars as inconsistent on busy nights, but the ingredient quality and cooking have kept both the crowds and the accolades coming.
