The Spot
Dalessandro's opened in Roxborough in 1960 and has stayed on the same corner ever since, on Wendover Street just up from Manayunk. It runs as a mom-and-pop counter operation: order at the front, watch the grill work, eat standing or perched at the bar while deliveries of meat, bread, and produce arrive throughout the day.

The cheesesteak is built on fresh-cut rib-eye chopped fine enough that cheese and grilled onions work into every bite instead of sitting on top. Cheese comes in three options — American, Sharp Provolone, or Whiz — and a counter of crushed hot peppers, banana peppers, sweet peppers, fried onions, and roasted green peppers sits out for topping, most of it at no charge. A 100% white-meat chicken steak covers non-beef eaters, and a Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak with hot sauce and blue cheese runs its own direction. Beyond the cheesesteak, the menu holds proper Italian deli hoagies, Angus burgers, and a Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie for dessert, alongside a beer list running past 20 selections.

Michelin awarded Dalessandro's a Bib Gourmand in 2025. Locals treat the wait as part of the routine, and regulars know to bring cash.
