Banchero traces its name back to a Genoese immigrant family that opened a bakery in Buenos Aires' La Boca neighborhood in the late 1800s, where the fugazza con queso — a cheese-stuffed pizza — was first created. Juan Banchero later struck out on his own, opening the original Pizzeria Banchero in 1932, a spot that became a gathering place for Buenos Aires artists and public figures. The Miami location in North Beach carries that lineage forward with a casual, family-style room built around the same specialty.
The cheese fugazza is the dish to order: a tall, dense pizza with mozzarella baked both inside and on top, finished with charred white onions and a whole olive on each slice. The milanesas come out oversized, draped well past the edges of the plate, and the alfajor for dessert is served notably large. The menu runs to dozens of pizza options beyond the fugazza, but the house specialty is the draw.
