Our Take

Barra Callao sits at a narrow Nikkei counter in North Miami Beach, and the setup does the work of explaining the food before you taste it: a chef close enough to hear you think, a sake list, a room that reads omakase without being one. You still order. That distinction matters, because it means the kitchen isn't hiding behind a set script — it's making a case, dish by dish, for Peruvian-Japanese flavor pushed as far as it'll go without losing its nerve.

The room used to announce itself with a mural of Héctor Lavoe; it's gone now, replaced by a sleeker grey counter, but the salsa energy didn't leave with the paint. That's the real trick here. Barra Callao has figured out how to grow up without losing the party — bold, loud flavors served in a space that now looks like it belongs on a serious culinary map, without the food getting precious about it.

It's landed on a notable recognition list and picked up a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, and both make sense as confirmation rather than surprise. This is a special-occasion counter that still feels like Miami at full volume. Sit close. Order a lot. Bring Pilsens in your head if not in hand.

The Spot
Barra Callao is a 12-seat Peruvian Nikkei chef counter in North Miami Beach. Chef Anthony Verastegui draws on his Peruvian heritage and years of international kitchen experience to pair Japanese technique with Peruvian ingredients in dishes built around what's seasonal.

The counter turns out ceviche made with the day's catch, lime juice, and ají limo, alongside tiradito al olivo finished with botija olive leche de tigre and white truffle oil, hamachi with truffle rocoto sauce and sweet potato mousse, and hotate sashimi with yuzu leche de tigre and pickled goldenberries. Florida oysters rotate by season, salmon comes with a passion fruit nikkei sauce and ikura, and wood-fired lamb chops are marinated in ají panca and served with confit potatoes.

The room has shifted since opening — a mural of salsa icon Héctor Lavoe that once anchored the space has given way to a sleeker, more polished counter look. The chef still takes orders dish by dish rather than running a fixed tasting sequence, working close enough to the narrow counter to follow the room's conversation.

Michelin awarded Barra Callao a Bib Gourmand in 2026.
