JJ's traces back to 1985, when Jimmy purchased JJ Malane's from his former business partner, the saloon's original namesake. The Malane's concept faded, but JJ's kept going, becoming a fixture on Kansas City's West Plaza. The restaurant survived a fire and now operates from Level 1 of the Polsinelli Building.
The kitchen works with local farmers and turns out fine-dining staples: rack of lamb, lamb chops, filet, and tenderloin, alongside sides like brussels sprouts and spaghetti squash that regulars order on repeat. Pear salad and rotating specials such as halibut and ahi tuna round out the menu.
The wine list is extensive enough to be part of the restaurant's identity, and servers are frequently singled out by name for guiding guests through it. JJ's was named a 2025 James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Outstanding Wine Program.
