Lankford's Grocery & Market started as a mom-and-pop grocery store opened by Aubrey and Nona Lankford near the old 4th Ward/Freedmen's Town area of Houston in 1937. Their daughter Eydie Lankford Prior and her husband Daryl "Cotton" Prior took over in the early 1980s, converting the business first into an icehouse and eventually into the full-service restaurant it is today, building its name around burgers along the way.
Eydie retired in 2021, passing leadership to a third generation, Paul and Jessica Prior, who now run the family business. The restaurant sits at 88 Dennis Street in Midtown, the neighborhood that grew up around it over the decades, with seating available both inside and at outdoor picnic tables.
Lankford's has been featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and on the Texas Bucket List, and has built a following of regulars who treat it as a long-running Houston institution.
