The Spot
Ima Izakaya is the flagship of a small family of Detroit restaurants, and the Corktown location sets the template: an extensive menu of ramen, rice bowls, udon noodles, and house-made dumplings, cooked in part on a robata grill that's one of the only ones in the area, built for consistent char and flavor. The room is cozy and laid-back, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The food leans veggie-forward, drawing on Japanese and pan-Asian influences with touches of Korean and Vietnamese flavor, all in service of what the restaurant calls health-conscious comfort food rather than anything trend-driven. Happy hour has built its own following among regulars.

Ima Izakaya was named to Eater's Essential 38 list for Detroit.
