Takoi occupies 2520 Michigan Avenue in Corktown, though it didn't start there. The restaurant began as a food truck called KATOI in 2014, moved through an Ann Arbor pop-up, and opened as a brick-and-mortar spot in March 2016. Eleven months later, the building was destroyed by arson. The team started rebuilding the next day and reopened exactly six months after that, in August 2017, under the new name TAKOI.
The kitchen turns out modern Thai cooking filtered through Michigan seasonality, with a DIY approach that extends to growing its own produce. Takoi operates HiO Farm about a mile from the restaurant, and during peak growing season the menu shifts to spotlight that harvest alongside techniques and flavors drawn from Thailand's regional cuisines.
Eater named Takoi to its Essential 38. Diners describe it as a destination worth the drive, prized for its service and its feel as a hidden gem tucked into Corktown.
