Noble Fish opened in 1984 as a small Japanese market in Clawson and added a sushi kitchen in 1991. Takayuki "Guchi-san" Sakaguchi, who grew up on an island in Kyushu and worked in several sushi restaurants across the American Midwest, took over as manager in 1998 and built the place into what it is today.
The menu runs through nigiri, specialty rolls, and combination sets, with a reputation built on oversized rolls and fresh seafood sold at reasonable prices. The attached market still stocks Japanese groceries alongside the sushi counter, and the space now also houses White Wolf Japanese Patisserie's coffee and pastry counter.
What began as a cramped counter tucked into the back of the grocery store has since gone through a full renovation, adding more dining room seating for a menu that's kept its market roots intact.
