Cafe Polonia has been serving Polish and Eastern European food near Andrew Square since opening in December 2002. The dining room is built around handcrafted furnishings meant to evoke a countryside cottage in the mountain region of Poland, a deliberate contrast to the auto-shop surroundings outside.
The menu runs through Polish staples: Beet Soup (Barszcz) and Sour Rye Soup (Żurek) to start, Smoked Salmon Potato Pancakes, then entrees like Breast of Duck and Pork Loin in Mushroom Sauce made with a homemade sauce. The traditional-dishes section covers pierogi, Kielbasa and Cabbage Stew, and Polish Pizza (Zapiekanka), along with homemade potato dumplings served in mushroom or tomato sauce.
Portions run generous — pierogi and potato pancakes arrive in big plates built for a cold day — and the restaurant carries a selection of Polish beers not widely available elsewhere in the city.
