Honey Moon Spirit Lounge works because it commits fully to a mood. The house near UT still shows its age on purpose — creaky floors, narrow staircases, an attic door left in plain sight — and the design leans into that history instead of scrubbing it out. Wraparound bars, velvet chairs, vintage chandeliers, wallpaper that reads like an antique shop had a fever dream. It's a genuinely rare thing in Austin, a bar built for a date rather than a crowd.
The menu roams, Creole shrimp and grits next to Seoul fried chicken, and that range could easily read as unfocused. It doesn't, because the kitchen clearly knows where its strengths sit. Skip the entrées and order like a regular: fried mushrooms, charred cabbage with blue cheese, a couple of small plates to split. The cocktail list, cheeky names included, does as much work as the food.
Local coverage has kept circling back to this place across seasons, and a national list took notice too. None of that is the reason to go. The reason is that the room, the drinks, and the small plates all pull in the same direction, and few bars in this city manage that.
