Our Take

Jaleo is the restaurant that made José Andrés a name in Washington, and it still functions as the anchor of everything he's built here since. The room hasn't lost its pull: red neon out front, honeycomb tile inside, a dining room that fills with National Portrait Gallery tourists, federal workers on lunch break, and families out for a occasion, all at the same tables. Few restaurants this size hold a mixed crowd like that for this long without coasting on nostalgia.

Jaleo doesn't coast. The tapas format keeps the kitchen honest in a way a single entrée never would — every plate has to earn its spot on a crowded table, and the volume of covers means the kitchen is executing constantly, not occasionally. That's a harder discipline to sustain over decades than most restaurants ever face, and it's why this one still reads as an institution rather than a relic.

The recognition backs up what the room already tells you. Three straight years of Michelin selection, two prior years as a Bib Gourmand pick, and two James Beard finalist nods for Outstanding Restaurant don't happen to a place running on inertia. Jaleo has been open since the '90s and is still being judged on the same terms as anything new. That's the real case for it.

The Spot
Jaleo opened in 1993 as José Andrés's first Washington restaurant, and it helped turn Penn Quarter into the busy neighborhood it is today. The design leans into the festive spirit of Spain filtered through Andrés's own sensibility, and the location near the National Mall and Capital One Arena makes it a natural stop before or after a day of sightseeing or a game downtown. John White runs the kitchen as head chef, with CJ Chisambisha as general manager.

The menu runs through Spanish tapas — patatas bravas, garlic shrimp, pan con tomate, jamón ibérico, endive, rabbit — alongside paella and a tasting menu option. Olive oil ice cream and flan round out dessert.

Jaleo has been a fixture on the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Restaurant list, appearing as a semifinalist across multiple years through the 2010s and a finalist in 2019 and 2020. Michelin awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2019, 2021, and 2022, then selected it for the Washington, D.C. guide in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
