Our Take

Cucina Morini runs two restaurants inside one room, and only one of them is essential. At night it's competent, well-priced Italian cooking from a chef who also runs Caruso's Grocery, a few neighborhoods over. It's good. It is not the reason to come.

Mornings are the reason. The dining room drops its formality entirely — you seat yourself, scan a code, grab your own silverware, and the whole space turns into a loose, sunny café. The bodega-style breakfast sandwich, egg and fillings like fresno chilis or lemon aioli piled onto a warm brioche bun, is the kind of thing you start planning your week around. The bomboloni show up dusted and warm and disappear fast. This is a bread program doing serious work disguised as something casual.

That gap between the two menus is unusual to see acknowledged this plainly, and it's to the kitchen's credit that the morning service is confident enough to be worth building a reputation on by itself.

The city has noticed. Two consecutive years on the Michelin selection, a James Beard semifinalist nod for the chef, and a spot on Washingtonian's list all point at the same restaurant. Go for breakfast. Everything else here is a bonus.

The Spot
Cucina MORINI brings Southern Italian cooking to Mount Vernon Triangle, built around coastal flavors and handmade pastas. The restaurant is part of Altamarea Group.

The dining room reads refined but comfortable, suited equally to a date night or a larger gathering, with service that reviewers consistently point to as attentive. The menu stays curated and focused rather than sprawling.

Cucina MORINI made Eater's essential 38 list for Washington D.C. and was named a James Beard Foundation Best Chef (Mid-Atlantic) semifinalist in 2025. Michelin selected the restaurant in both its 2024 and 2025 guides.
