Communion earns its name on the strength of what happens at the table: food built around care, service that keeps pace with it, a room in the Central District that feels lived-in rather than styled for effect. The consistency shows up meal after meal, which is the harder trick than any single great plate.

The trade-offs are real and worth naming plainly. The wait can run long, and the tab lands on the higher side. Neither is disqualifying, but neither is invisible either — this is a place you plan for, not one you wander into on a whim.

What holds it together is the kitchen's track record. Back-to-back James Beard nods — an Emerging Chef semifinalist turn followed by a Best Chef finalist recognition for the Northwest Pacific region — aren't participation trophies. That's a kitchen operating at a level, not coasting on a moment.

Communion delivers what it promises often enough that the line and the price stop being complaints and start being the cost of admission. Worth it.
