Our Take

Monte's earns its keep on the fundamentals: food that lands, a room that holds its own, service that mostly moves at the right pace. That combination is rarer in Santa Barbara's Italian scene than the postcard views would suggest, and it's why the place reads as a genuine destination rather than a pleasant option among many.

The complaints that surface are minor and consistent — a kitchen that occasionally runs behind on a busy night — but they don't undercut the larger pattern. People leave saying it was worth it, and they mean the whole experience, not just one dish that saved the evening.

Michelin has selected Monte's two years running. That's confirmation, not the case itself. The case is that this is Italian cooking in Santa Barbara done with enough consistency and care that the recognition looks earned rather than lucky. Damn good, and reliably so.

The Spot
Monte's sits in the Lower Village of Montecito, on the tree-lined stretch of Coast Village Rd. Executive Chef Daniel Kim runs the kitchen, working from a menu shaped by Rincon Hill Farm, the restaurant's own regenerative farm in nearby Carpinteria — produce grown a few miles away dictates much of what lands on the plate.

Regulars point to the food, the room, and the service in equal measure, and the restaurant has quickly built a reputation as a go-to for date nights and special occasions in Montecito. The atmosphere leans romantic and polished, the kind of place that's become a fast neighborhood fixture since opening.

Monte's has been named to Michelin's Selected list in both the 2025 and 2026 Santa Barbara guides.
