Our Take

Forsythia sits in Old City, one of the busier stretches in Center City, and stakes out a slower rhythm than its address suggests. The room does the work of relaxing you: plants everywhere, black-and-white tile, globe lighting overhead, a long bar up front where couples split beef tartare while working through a wine list deep enough to argue over. It's a place built for lingering, not turning tables.

The menu backs that pace with real specificity. A duck confit omelet and escargot finished in chartreuse-almond butter take French standards somewhere unexpected without losing the original. Foie gras mousse paired with lemon poppy seed brioche is the kind of pairing that reads strange on paper and makes sense on the plate. The small, large, and vegetable structure gives the kitchen room to be playful without turning the menu into a tasting-menu substitute.

Philadelphia Magazine has kept it on its list, and Michelin selected Forsythia for its guide in 2025. That recognition tracks with what's on the table: a modern French restaurant willing to twist its own classics rather than just repeat them.

The Spot
Forsythia is a contemporary French restaurant from Chef-Proprietor Christopher Kearse, cooking from an open kitchen in a bright, modern room. The name comes from Forsythia Drive in Levittown, Pennsylvania, where Kearse grew up, and the interior carries that through with forsythia flowers and yellow-and-white accents worked into the décor.

The menu runs small plates and entrées that rotate frequently, built around elevated, French bistro-inspired cooking with a contemporary edge. Diners often mention the beignets, mussels, and oven-roasted dishes finished with truffle.

The bar operates as its own draw within the restaurant, pouring an extensive selection of global wines alongside craft cocktails, local beers, and an espresso program for after dinner.

Forsythia was named to Philadelphia Magazine's 2025 best-of list, had a member of its kitchen team recognized in StarChefs' 2025 Rising Stars class, and was selected for the Michelin Guide in 2025.
