Pupuseria La Macarena is a family-run Salvadoran restaurant in the Leonidas/River Bend area, built as a tribute to Isabel, who arrived in New Orleans in 1972 with the goal of running a small family restaurant in the city. Made-to-order pupusas are the signature offering, and the kitchen makes semiannual trips to El Salvador to bring back cheeses, horchata, and spices used across the menu.
The menu spans breakfast through dinner: Desayuno Salvadoreño, breakfast burritos, and Hangover Huevos in the morning; pupusas, chicken flautas, and vegan tacos for lunch and dinner; carne asada rounding out the dinner offerings. In 2025 the restaurant added a full vegan and vegetarian menu, along with gluten-free options, expanding on its traditional Latin American lineup.
