Alebrije | Nashville Mexican Restaurant

Alebrije runs on masa, and it shows up everywhere: shrimp empanadas with a shell that shatters clean, mushroom tacos carrying more heat than you expect, a huarache buried under crisped potato. The cajeta churros close things out the way they should, sticky and warm. This is a kitchen that took a food truck's worth of good instincts and scaled them up without losing the point.

The move from pop-ups and a truck parked outside bars to a permanent room on Gallatin Ave hasn't softened anything. If anything the food tightened up. Nobody else in town is working Mexican food at this level of specificity, dish after dish built around the same masa base and none of them repeating themselves.

Nashville Guru has already put Alebrije on its radar, and it's shown up on national lists too. The location still isn't easy to spot from the street. That's the only real complaint here — once you're inside, there isn't a dish worth skipping.
