Our Take

Mutra sits in a North Miami strip mall and operates on a different ambition than the kosher food around it. This is a kitchen willing to be strange on purpose — Israeli technique crossed with Yemeni and Jewish American deli reference points, built into a menu that reads like a string of inside jokes with real cooking behind them. The ajo blanco beet salad is the clearest proof: temperature and texture doing more work than you expect from a plate that sounds simple.

Not everything lands. A beef tongue built as a nod to classic deli misses its mark, and the Yemeni pancake veal tacos are more fun as an idea than as a finished dish. But a kitchen that swings this often is going to miss sometimes, and the misses don't undercut the project — they're the cost of actually trying something, which is rarer in kosher dining than it should be.

Mutra earned a Michelin star in 2026, and the recognition fits. It's not just raising the ceiling for what a kosher restaurant can be — it's proof that cooking this personality-driven doesn't need to compromise to keep kosher. You don't need to keep kosher to want to eat here. You just need to want something with a point of view.

The Spot
Mutra is built around Raz Shabtai's chef's counter, where diners sit close to the kitchen's work. Shabtai came up through every station of the restaurant — dishwasher to line cook to bartender — before stints at Alenbi, Basta, Raphael, and Le Relais Jaffa in Israel and New York, and brought that range to a North Miami strip-mall space running on a farm-to-table ethos with named local and regional purveyors.

The menu draws on Levantine and North African traditions filtered through a kosher kitchen, with dishes named as much for personality as ingredients: kubaneh bread with tomato foam and olives, a falafel croquette with tahi-amba, chicken liver pâté built toward foie gras, and a robata-grilled hanger steak with celery root cream. Sourcing is called out by name — tahini from Har Bracha, sourdough from Gifted Crust, mushrooms from Lion Farm. The kitchen has drawn attention for expanding what a kosher menu in Miami can look like, with dishes that lean into texture and risk rather than deli tradition.

Michelin awarded Mutra one star in its 2026 guide.
