The Spot
Gatlin's BBQ operates out of a modest shopping center storefront in Central Northwest Houston, the kind of address that gives no hint of what's happening inside. It's a family-owned operation, and that personal, run-by-the-people-who-built-it feel comes through in how regulars describe the place — plus the occasional high-profile visitor who's found their way to the parking lot.

Brisket and baby back ribs anchor the smoked meats, but the sides have built their own following: potato salad and lemon pound cake come up in conversation as often as the barbecue itself. Sandwiches round out a counter-service menu that draws a line out the door.

Gatlin's has been named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Texas, a nod to its standing among Houston's serious barbecue addresses despite the unassuming location.
