The Spot
Smakosz is a second-generation family-owned restaurant on West Lawrence Avenue, serving traditional Polish cuisine alongside more modern, internationally-influenced dishes. The kitchen splits between two registers: Old World recipes from the Lublin region passed down through the family, and contemporary plates that pull in flavors from elsewhere.

The menu reflects that split. Beef tenderloin tartare with pickled mushrooms and mustard sits near the Hungarian Pancake — a potato pancake topped with goulash, mozzarella, and sour cream. Potato pancakes are a regular fixture, and fresh salmon and trout appear on Fridays.

The room is built to feel like an extension of the family's own home, a cozy neighborhood spot in Portage Park for a drink and either a classic or modern Polish meal. Pierogis and potato pancakes in particular have built a steady following among regulars.
