Cajun Queen has been serving Charlotte since 1985 out of a 100-year-old house in historic Elizabeth. The building splits the night in two: an upstairs dining room with live jazz, and a quieter downstairs for guests who'd rather talk than shout over the band.
Fresh fish specials run nightly alongside Cajun staples, with catfish, duck, and scallops turning up often in what diners order, plus red beans and rice on the regular menu. Bourbon pecan pie, bread pudding, and beignets cover dessert, and beignets show up again at Sunday brunch, which has built its own following separate from dinner service.
The restaurant also hosts private parties and events, and regulars describe an owner who comes out to greet returning customers by name.
