The Glass Onion sits on Savannah Highway in West Ashley, serving Southern comfort food rooted in owner and executive chef Chris Stewart's Alabama upbringing. Many of the dishes trace back to his grandmother Jennie Ruth Haley's Sunday supper table — country fried steak, fried chicken, cornbread, deviled eggs, pies, and cobblers among them.
Stewart came up through Charleston kitchens including Magnolias, Slightly North of Broad, and FIG before opening The Glass Onion in 2007 with partners who have since moved on to other projects. He and his wife Suzanne Stewart, who heads the bakery program, now run the restaurant together.
The kitchen leans on a long list of local farmers, fishmongers, and purveyors for its ingredients, and the menu covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner alongside a dessert list and a kids' menu.
