Our Take

Fig has been arguing for Charleston's food scene since before the city needed convincing, and two decades in, the argument still holds. This is a neighborhood bistro in the plainest sense — a menu that moves with the season, nothing frozen in place, nothing coasting on reputation alone. The chicken liver pate is the kind of dish that makes newcomers double-check the menu, smooth enough to pass for foie gras at a fraction of the fuss. The ricotta gnocchi alla bolognese is comfort food built with real technique underneath it.

Order the fish. Fig's relationships with local purveyors like Abundant Seafood show up on the plate — a steamed b-liner snapper that tastes like it left the water that morning, because it did. The wine list carries the same seriousness as the kitchen, built by people who clearly care whether the pairing works and not just whether the bottle is expensive.

The recognition has been consistent rather than sudden: James Beard finalist nods for the restaurant, a win and repeat finalist finishes for the wine program, a Michelin selection, a spot among the country's best new restaurants decades into its run. That last one tells the real story. Fig isn't new. It just refuses to get old.

The Spot
FIG is a neighborhood restaurant in downtown Charleston, its dining room centered on a communal table alongside regular seating. The kitchen keeps its approach straightforward: seasonal, Lowcountry-sourced ingredients presented without much dressing up.

The menu holds onto a set of dishes long enough that regulars order them by name — gnocchi, fish stew, razor clams, flounder, hanger steak, and soft shell crab, with potatoes, salad, and pork showing up often. The wine list has developed its own following.

FIG's recognition runs deep and goes back years. The James Beard Foundation named its chef Best Chef winner in 2015 and 2009, with finalist nods in 2008 and 2007, and an Outstanding Chef semifinalist nod in 2017. Its wine program won Outstanding Wine Program in 2018, after finalist nods in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and the restaurant itself was a James Beard Outstanding Restaurant finalist in both 2019 and 2020. More recently, FIG made StarChefs' 2024 Rising Stars list for Charleston-Savannah, was named to the Michelin Selected list in 2025, and appeared on Robb Report's Best New Restaurants list in 2026.
