Our Take

Malagón is a Spanish market with a starred taperia attached — conservas, jamón, and cheeses up front, bottles the restaurant says are poured nowhere else in the state, and a menu of regional Spanish plates cooked behind them.

The star, earned in 2025, landed on the least pretentious fine-dining operation in Charleston: no tasting-menu theater, just Spain taken seriously at retail and at table. The city's dining scene runs on Southern identity. Malagón imported a second one, whole.

The Spot
Malagón operates as a combined market and taperia in Cannonborough-Elliotborough, focused exclusively on Spanish cuisine. The market side sells canned seafood, Spanish cheese and charcuterie, marcona almonds, and other imported goods, some of which aren't available anywhere else in South Carolina. The taperia side runs a menu of small and large plates centered on regional Spanish cooking, paired with a beverage program of wine and beer sourced from Spain.

Dishes that come up often among diners include octopus, croquettes, paella, sobrasada, tortillas, and boquerones, alongside cheese, charcuterie, and vegetable plates that change with the seasons. Malagón is the sister restaurant of Chez Nous, located a block and a half away.

Michelin awarded Malagón one star in its 2025 guide.
