The Spot
The Helmand takes its name from Afghanistan's longest river, and has served traditional Afghan cuisine from East Cambridge since the family opened it in 1975, moving to its current spot near CambridgeSide Galleria in 1994. The dining room pairs a small fireplace with a wood-burning oven that turns out the restaurant's flatbread, built from fresh Grade AA halal meat and made-from-scratch recipes with their own spice blends.

The menu runs through dishes like chowpan, a grilled marinated rack of lamb, and qabelee, rice baked with lamb shanks and raisins, alongside kaddo (sugared pumpkin with meat sauce), dwopiaza, and sabzi. Mantwo served over yogurt and leek-filled aushak dumplings are also part of the regular rotation, and vegetarian and vegan dishes run throughout the menu. A full table service bar rounds out the room, which has kept largely the same feel for close to thirty years, with servers known for letting tables linger by the fire.
