Rusty Ladle is a soup-centered takeout and to-go operation in the Outer Sunset, built next door to the Great Highway Gallery. The rotating soup menu includes a Bodega Bay style clam chowder, a vegan tomato soup, a vegan and gluten-free sweet potato soup called Soup of the Valkyrie, and a chicken noodle with matzo ball. Sandwiches include La Magnifica (schiacciata bread, mortadella, provolone, olive salad, truffle oil) and the Schmelty, an inside-out grilled cheese that can be topped with house-made kimchi or house-made turkey chorizo. Friday specials have included a tomato pie made with schiacciata bread and a twice-baked potato stuffed with a hot dog.
The restaurant comes from chef John Lindsey, who trained at the California Culinary Academy and worked at Hayes Street Grill before a stint with Mark Miller at Coyote Cafe in New Mexico. He later returned to Hayes Street Grill, where he met his wife and Rusty Ladle co-founder Kristin Lubenow Lindsey. The restaurant sits beside the Great Highway Gallery, which Lindsey also runs, combining his interests in food and art under one roof.
