The Spot
Besharam is a regional Gujarati restaurant in San Francisco's Dogpatch district, opened in 2018 inside the Minnesota Street Project. It's co-owned and helmed by Chef Heena Patel, a self-taught cook with no culinary school background, who built the menu around Gujarati vegetarian cooking paired with seasonal California ingredients. The space runs as fine dining, with table and bar seating.

The menu is organized into four sections, each drawing on flavors from a different major city in Gujarat, built from vegetarian small plates. Meat was dropped from the menu entirely, with the format revamped again in summer 2021. The undhiyo pie has become a standout dish. Plates carry playful, pointed sayings — "Spicy Food Is For Spicy Girls," "Hot Chai, Cold Revenge" — echoed in a mural by artist Hatecopy at the back of the dining room.

Co-owner Paresh Patel runs the wine program, bar, and general operations, pairing the kitchen's bold Gujarati flavors with selections built from decades in the wine and spirits trade.

The restaurant's chef was a James Beard Foundation Best Chef semifinalist in 2022. Regulars describe the food, service, and atmosphere consistently in strong terms and treat the price as justified, though opinion splits on whether the cooking is more rooted in tradition or in reinvention.
