Our Take

The Jerk Shack does one thing and does it with total conviction: Caribbean cooking built around jerk seasoning, smoke, and heat, served without apology in a corner of the West Side that other kitchens have overlooked. There's no attempt to soften the cuisine for a wider audience here. The jerk chicken and pork carry real char and real spice, the kind that assumes you can handle it.

That confidence is the whole case. A restaurant this unbothered by convention, holding down a neighborhood spot rather than chasing a flashier address, only works if the food backs it up. Here it does, consistently enough that it's not a one-visit fluke.

The recognition confirms what the plates already argue. Back-to-back Michelin Bib Gourmands and a James Beard semifinalist nod for Best Chef in Texas don't happen to restaurants coasting on novelty. They happen to kitchens that keep delivering the same sharp, honest version of themselves, year after year, without needing to be anything else.

The Spot
The Jerk Shack is chef Nicola Blaque's flagship, opened in 2018 with her husband, Cornelius Massey, after Blaque left a ten-year Army career and trained at the Culinary Institute of America. The restaurant approaches Caribbean cooking through a fusion lens rather than a strictly traditional one.

The menu runs from jerk chicken and fried chicken to weekend-only oxtail, shrimp and grits, chicken curry, and a vegetarian tofu curry served with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. Sticky chicken, buffalo wings, rundown shrimp, and a chopped jerk chicken sandwich round out the savory side, with coco honey butter rolls, rum raisin brownies, and banana pudding for dessert.

Blaque was a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Texas in 2023, the same year StarChefs named her a Rising Star for the Austin-San Antonio region. Michelin awarded The Jerk Shack a Bib Gourmand in both 2024 and 2025.
