Our Take

Lovely's Fifty Fifty makes a case for pizza as a vehicle for whatever Oregon's farms are doing that week. The crust is whole-grain sourdough, chewy and substantial enough to hold its own against toppings that read more like a farmers market haul than a topping list — summer chanterelles, hand-picked sorrel, spigarello, foraged flowers. Nothing here is decorative. Every pie argues that Portland-style pizza is its own category, not a regional accent on someone else's format.

The ice cream is not an afterthought. Peach leaf and purple barley on a spelt cone made in-house is the kind of detail that separates a place doing seasonal cooking from a place using seasonal as a marketing word.

The room is small, the booths are wood, and there's no getting around waiting for a table. That's the cost of a kitchen this precise refusing to scale itself into blandness.

The James Beard Foundation has recognized the cooking here three separate years running, for Outstanding Chef and Best Chef both. That's not a fluke nomination. It's a kitchen that keeps finding new ways to put a whole season on a 12-inch pie and make it taste inevitable.

The Spot
Lovely's Fifty Fifty is a family-owned restaurant in North Portland, open since 2010. The kitchen builds its pizzas on whole-grain sourdough techniques and uses produce sourced exclusively from Oregon farms, in keeping with the West Coast farmers market tradition. Pies come topped with fresh greens, foraged flowers, wild mushrooms, and other vegetables that shift with what's available.

Regulars point to the creative sides and desserts alongside the pizza itself, in a dining room known for attentive service and a considered, aesthetic space.

The restaurant holds a spot on the Eater 38, and its kitchen has drawn sustained attention from the James Beard Foundation — an Outstanding Chef semifinalist in 2025, an Outstanding Chef finalist in 2024, and a Best Chef semifinalist in 2020.
