Langbaan sits behind Phuket Cafe, taking its name from the Thai word for the back-of-house area where a home's kitchen and dining room meet — the space where meals are cooked and eaten together with family. That idea of a shared kitchen table is the premise behind the restaurant: classic Thai dishes reworked into a refined multi-course tasting menu, built using Pacific Northwest ingredients.
The room holds just 24 seats, an intimate counter setup that puts diners close to the kitchen, with service and pacing built around that multi-course format.
In 2024, the James Beard Foundation named Langbaan Outstanding Restaurant. It was also a semifinalist for the Foundation's Best New Restaurant award in 2015, and has appeared on Eater's Eater 38 list of standout Portland restaurants.
