John's Roast Pork has occupied the corner of Weccacoe and Snyder Avenue in South Philadelphia since 1930, when Domenico Bucci started the business. It's operated under a few names over the decades — John's Lunch, the Snyder Avenue Lunch Bar, and originally The Shack — but the sandwich at its center hasn't changed: roast pork seasoned to an Olde World family recipe, slow-roasted and sliced to order. The Bucci family now runs it into a third generation.
The menu stays close to its roots: the original Roast Pork Sandwich, the Ultimate Cheesesteak, and a Roast Beef Sandwich.
In 2006, the James Beard Foundation named John's Roast Pork an America's Classic, recognizing it among the country's enduring, locally cherished restaurants.
