Our Take

El Molino Central has spent the better part of a decade getting the same call from the James Beard Foundation — a Best Chef semifinalist nod four years running, 2017 through 2020 — which is the kind of streak that doesn't happen on a lucky taco. That's sustained, disciplined cooking, not a moment.

What keeps people driving into Sonoma for it is consistency of a rarer kind: the room, the service, and the plates all land the same way visit after visit. Nobody's hedging here. The praise across recent visits is uniform — genuine Mexican cooking, not a version softened for a Napa Valley crowd, served by people who seem to actually want you there.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition for 2026 confirms what the Beard nods already argued: this is a kitchen operating at a level well above its price point, doing it without theatrics. El Molino Central isn't chasing trends or reinventing the cuisine. It's just executing it correctly, meal after meal, which turns out to be rarer than it should be.

The Spot
El Molino Central runs out of a small space on Central Avenue in Sonoma, serving Mexican food with beer and wine and a to-go option built into the setup. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, the kitchen shifts to a dedicated chilaquiles breakfast before the regular menu takes over for the rest of the day.

The restaurant's chef has been named a James Beard Best Chef semifinalist four years running, from 2017 through 2020. Michelin awarded El Molino Central a Bib Gourmand in its Wine Country guide.

It has built a strong following in Sonoma, with regulars and visitors from across Napa Valley treating the drive out as part of the routine.
