Sarussi traces back to 1964, when it opened as an Italian restaurant. A Cuban immigrant later bought the place and began adding Cuban dishes to the menu, eventually phasing out the Italian food entirely. One holdover from those early days stuck around and became the signature: a Cuban sandwich built on a pizza oven, mozzarella, and sweet Italian bread instead of the usual components.
Sarussi now operates three locations, and the Bird Road spot has its own identity within that lineage. It's run by a Nicaraguan owner who has added their own touches to the menu, including a fritanga burrito and other Nicaraguan dishes alongside the Cuban sandwich the brand is known for.
