Our Take

Agnes and Sherman runs on collision. Crab rangoon nachos become a chips-and-dip situation, egg foo young gets drenched in crawfish gumbo gravy, and Taiwanese disco fries turn up under pickled mustard greens. On paper it reads like stunt cooking. On the table it reads like a kitchen that understands exactly how these traditions overlap and where they don't, which is the harder trick.

The room does its own version of the same move: a glamorous 1970s living room, maroon and yellow, family photos on the walls, a full bar pouring yuzu highballs. Tables with the lazy susan turn dinner into a group sport, and the portions are built for overordering on purpose. Crispy fried shrimp arrives good enough to eat shell and all. Al pastor fried rice gets fought over.

None of this reads like a novelty once you're in a chair. It reads like a diner that rebuilt the category from scratch, comfort food with real technique behind the joke of it.

The Heights didn't need convincing, but the record backs it up regardless: a Michelin selection, and a James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist nod. The city noticed what a fun room can hide — a kitchen working harder than it lets on.

The Spot
Agnes and Sherman takes its name from Chef Nick's parents: his mother came to the U.S. from Hong Kong for college, his father was born and raised in San Francisco. The restaurant grew out of a childhood spent moving between Chinese wedding banquets and Giants games, dim sum and House of Prime Rib — a mix he's tried to distill into a single neighborhood diner in Houston's Northside.

The menu runs across lunch, brunch, dinner, and happy hour, with an Asian-diner fusion approach that's produced standouts like the scallion waffle and shrimp toast. Regulars describe the room's atmosphere and service as part of the draw alongside the food.

Agnes and Sherman has been named to Michelin's Selected list for 2025, picked as a Houstonia Magazine best-of selection for 2025, and named both a semifinalist and finalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best New Restaurant award for 2026. The Infatuation scored it 8.5/10.
