Carmine Lonardo's began as a way to make ends meet after founder Carmine Lonardo, who emigrated from Campobasso, Italy, lost his job at a Denver meatpacking plant in 1970. He opened an Italian market with his wife, selling housemade sausage links alongside imported pasta, olive oil, and canned goods. The shop is still in the family, now run by Carmine Lonardo Jr.
The deli side is built around cold cut subs and the Italian sausage sandwich — provolone and peppers over housemade sausage, bathed in marinara — served on freshly baked rolls. The retail side keeps selling the market goods and frozen packs that got the place started.
5280 Magazine has listed Carmine Lonardo's among its Denver picks.
