Cross-Rhodes has occupied a building on Chicago Avenue built in 1895 as a meat packing plant since 1984, when Chicago entrepreneur Jeff Russell opened it to bring Greek cooking to Evanston. An open kitchen sits behind the front dining room, letting diners watch the food come together while looking out onto the street.
The menu leans on Greek staples — lamb chops, gyros, souvlaki, moussaka, pastitsio, spanakopita, Greek salads, and pita sandwiches — served alongside American plates like the Cross-Rhodes charburger, fried shrimp, and bbq chicken. Vegetarian versions of the moussaka and pastitsio are also on the menu.
Russell passed away in 2012, but the restaurant has stayed family-run, and it's kept a loyal, multi-generational following across Evanston and the North Shore for its Greek chicken, skirt steak, and consistent, welcoming service.
