Our Take

Supperland takes a midcentury church in Plaza Midwood and keeps the bones honest — tables where pews stood, a kitchen where the pulpit was. It could have been a gimmick. It isn't, because the food backs up the room. Baked brie bites and hot onion dip open things simply enough, but the seafood tower stacked absurdly high signals the kitchen's actual ambition, and the 14-foot hickory and oak grill does real work on a whole roasted chicken and a 16-ounce prime ribeye.

The sides are where the kitchen shows its hand: miso mac and cheese and broccoli with bone marrow butter aren't Southern comfort food playing it safe, they're Southern comfort food with an argument. Family-style service makes the whole thing feel generous rather than fussy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.

The speakeasy tucked into the church annex's basement adds a second act worth staying for, and the cocktail program has earned national attention for exactly that reason.

Michelin has selected it, and the James Beard Foundation named it a semifinalist for cocktail service in 2025. Those are confirmations, not the case. The case is a church doing everything a church shouldn't, and doing it well.

The Spot
Supperland occupies two old church buildings in Plaza Midwood, turning a restored mid-century sanctuary into a Southern steakhouse with a self-described "Southern Steakhouse meets Church Potluck" concept, drawing whimsical menu inspiration from the building's own history. Regulars order the croquettes, wagyu, pot roast, pork, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes.

The property spreads across a main dining room, the more intimate Bar at Supperland, a southern garden, a private wine room in the basement, an outdoor patio, and a Speakeasy tucked below the bar building. Custom-designed plates used in the dining room are also sold for home use. Supperland is part of the Tonidandel-Brown Restaurant Group.

Supperland made the Eater 38, was named a best new restaurant by Axios Charlotte, landed on Michelin's Selected list, and had a team member named a James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service in 2025.
