The Spot
McKoy's Smokehouse & Saloon started in 2006, when brothers Ryan and Jim Register teamed up with their father Namon to pool the family's recipes, aiming to fill what they saw as a gap in scratch-made cooking in Charlotte. Locally sourced meats and vegetables have stayed part of the operation since, and the restaurant has grown into a longtime fixture of South Charlotte.

The room plays up its saloon half as much as its smokehouse half — a rustic bar hung with beer signs and sports jerseys gives the place its atmosphere.

The menu runs through pulled pork, ribs, and a pit-smoked pot roast, backed by sides like collard greens, pinto beans, and fried squash. Mac and cheese and the sampler plate show up often in regulars' orders.

McKoy's has built a reputation for attentive, friendly service alongside its smoked meats, and regulars point to the fried squash as a standout among the sides.
