Alexander Michael's occupies the old Crowell-Berryhill Store, built in 1897 and known for years as the Berryhill Store before the building passed through life as a paint store, a laundromat, and even a gym before Fourth Ward's revitalization saved it from demolition. A. Michael Troiano Jr. and Alexander Copeland III leased the space in January 1983 and opened it as a tavern. Steve Casner, general manager from the start, became owner in 2005.
The bar and back bar are built from solid oak doors salvaged from the old Independence Building, once Charlotte's first skyscraper at Trade and Tryon; the beer cooler dates to a 1920s Charlotte grocery store.
