Our Take

Hyman's is the most efficient tourism operation in Charleston — a fourth-generation family business that seats hundreds, moves thousands of plates, and sends everyone home with a story about the plaques on the chairs.

None of that is cooking. The fish is ordinary, fried and sauced to a standard a hundred quieter Charleston kitchens clear without effort, and in more than a century no critic, guide, or award has found reason to say otherwise. In a city this good at seafood, an hour's wait for the ordinary is the worst trade downtown.

The Spot
Hyman's Seafood has operated out of its Meeting Street building in Ansonborough since 1890, making it one of the longer-running seafood addresses in downtown Charleston. A general store operates alongside the dining room, selling Hyman's-branded goods and food products.

The menu runs through Lowcountry seafood staples — hush puppies, crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, shrimp dishes, and the Carolina Delight are among the items that come up most often, alongside soup and fries.

Reputation here runs in two directions at once. Regulars and visitors alike point to the food, service, and atmosphere as reasons it's become a local landmark, while others describe long waits, disorganization, and service that varies depending on who's working the floor.
