Our Take

Comfort Kitchen sits in Dorchester cooking food from across the African diaspora with a confidence that doesn't ask permission. Senegalese yassa chicken, trout finished in za'atar brown butter, jerk jackfruit sliders — the menu moves through regions and traditions without losing a point of view. This isn't a sampler plate of "African food" flattened for a general audience. It's specific, and it's cooked like someone trusts the ingredients to do the work.

The open kitchen matters here. Grab one of the five bar seats and watch the line execute dishes that could easily turn gimmicky in less careful hands. A cocktail list built around things like the BNB daiquiri gives the whole night a loose, celebratory energy that matches the food instead of competing with it. Service keeps pace, and the room reads as a neighborhood spot that happens to be cooking at a serious level.

A James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist nod in 2024 confirms what the plates already argue: this is one of the more interesting kitchens in the city, not just in its category. Dorchester doesn't need an excuse to send you here. The food is the excuse.

The Spot
Comfort Kitchen occupies the Upham's Corner Comfort Station, a 1912 building restored by Historic Boston Inc. after decades sitting vacant. The restaurant opened here in January 2023 following a run of pop-ups around the city, with Chef Sāsha building a menu of global comfort food rooted in the ingredients and flavors of the African diaspora, drawn from lines connecting Asia to the Americas.

The kitchen turns out dishes like Senegalese yassa chicken, za'atar-brown-butter trout, and jerk jackfruit sliders, cooked in an open kitchen visible from a handful of bar seats. A full bar pours drinks including the BNB daiquiri, and the restaurant offers outdoor patio dining alongside its indoor room.

Comfort Kitchen was a James Beard Best New Restaurant finalist in 2024, and the restaurant's chef was a Best Chef: Northeast semifinalist in both 2025 and 2026. The restaurant was also included on The New York Times' Restaurant List in 2023.
