NG Cafe traces back to Y and Nguyet Quach, who spent decades in Austin's Chinese restaurant industry before running the Hao Hao restaurant in Round Rock for over twenty years. In 2013, they sold that restaurant so Nguyet could pursue her interest in baking, starting with a small bánh mì stand in the back of Hong Kong Supermarket alongside her sister Minh before growing into the current cafe on N Interstate 35 in North Austin.
The menu centers on signature bánh mì built on baguettes Nguyet still bakes fresh every morning, with options ranging from classic grilled pork to peppery shrimp and housemade tofu, each topped with house-pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, jalapeño, and house mayo. Beyond the sandwiches, the kitchen turns out homestyle dishes including bánh xèo, bún chả Hà Nội, a meatball and egg plate, sesame and peppery fried chicken, and a bone-in chicken curry braised with potatoes and carrots.
Regulars point to the family-run feel and the freshness of the baked goods, and the cafe has built a following as a neighborhood spot in North Austin.
