K&K Soul Food started in 1968 as a former pool hall with two bar stools and a small pass-through window, operating under the name Bankhead Restaurant before it became K&K. The same family has run it since, now led by Dorothy Davis and Kimario Smith.
The menu changes by day rather than staying fixed. Fried and smothered pork chops, baked and fried chicken, oxtails, cubed steak, chicken gizzards, and fried fish rotate through alongside collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes, with specials like turkey wings, meatloaf, and BBQ ribs appearing on certain days. Banana pudding, peach cobbler, and apple cobbler are on the dessert list every day.
Regulars keep coming back, and the fried chicken and fried fish are the dishes most often singled out among the restaurant's longtime customer base in English Avenue.
